Oliver + Lovegel (Carmel Mission, Monterey Plaza Hotel)

You can just imagine what Oliver Romero was thinking when he came out of the bathroom and found his then girlfriend’s family crying. While he was out, Lovegel Dealca told her family that she and Oliver were a couple. If you were Oliver, you’d hope that they were shedding tears of joy since the Dealcas have been family friends with the Romeros ever since Lovegel was 13 and Oliver 16. But it could very well have been the opposite, as Lovegel just came from a relationship and probably too soon to start another one, specially since Oliver was off to the Netherlands for training. As they say, long distance relationships rarely work.

But as Lovegel described it: “It was a magical, whirlwind courtship, the sort that we all think does not happen in real life.” And in real life, Lovegel and Oliver got married on the afternoon of August 30, 2008 at the Carmel Mission Basilica.

They chose the Carmel Mission because it reminded them of our very own San Agustin Church in Intramuros and from the start the couple wanted a very traditional Filipino Catholic wedding. From the male entourage all dressed in Barongs, to the veil and cord ceremony, to the officiant, the groom’s uncle, Bishop Oscar Solis, the first Filipino-American Bishop and down to the photographers (*wink*wink* hehe); the wedding was as Filipino as you can get in the United States.
